Upholding and developing “don ca tai tu” in Binh Duong

Although Binh Duong is not the birthplace of “don ca tai tu” (DCTT) (amateur music), movements of DCTT have pervaded vigorously spiritual life of Binh Duong people. Like an underground water course, DCTT has flowed into people’s heart of all social strata and been welcomed with affection by audiences…Vigorous meeting places of DCTTApart from DCTT Club under provincial Cultural Center and DCTT Club of provincial Literature and Art Society, DCTT Clubs at districts and towns have been also developed. Some active DCTT Clubs are: Di An town, Tan Uyen district, TDM City etc. Di An town’s Folk music club is a place where many well-known artists of provincial DCTT movement take part in. currently, the club has about 30 regular members comprising noted artists, like: Cao Thi Thang, Pham Ngoc Phu, Vu Thanh…   An activity of DCTT at Ngoc Hiep restaurant at Thuan An townArtist Pham Ngoc Phu, member of Club’s management board, said, the Club has been established for 15 years in order to preserve, promote forms of art, traditional music including DCTT. In addition weekly meeting, the Club has organized many cultural performances to exchange with many inside and outside the province.At the commune-level, Phuong Trinh DCTT Club of Tan Dinh commune, Ben Cat district was founded 3 years ago, but has drawn participation of many enthusiasts for DCTT. Every member of this club has their own profession, but they have a common passion. That is the connection between people created by this art.Recently, DCTT has also emerged at restaurants through activity of singing together. This has enhanced DCTT movement in the province. While new musical trends like pop, rock, rap, hip-hop etc. are growing, emergence of DCTT clubs or playgrounds of singing DCTT together is necessary to preserve national traditional beauty in people’s spiritual life. After months of requesting to recognize DCTT of Binh Duong as a national heritage, provincial Museum’s Director Nguyen Van Quoc assessed: “We have to attend a meeting of DCTT to witness the fierce vitality of DCTT. There, boundaries between social strata, ages have been removed. Passion for art brought all members together. This is also a chance for people to train their art skills as well as exchange their knowledge, experiences of performing”. Perhaps, because of its simplicity, closeness, the amateur nature of this music type has made it easier for DCTT to penetrate into people’s heart.DCTT is spreadingFrom urban to rural areas, from gardens to stages, DCTT has appeared everywhere, everytime in Binh Duong people’s spiritual life. Clubs have contributed to the spreading of DCTT. According to artist Cao Thi Thang, performance space of DCTT is the linkage and advantage of DCTT, because it does not require to be performed on stages with costumes. DCTT’s lovers just need a performance space, where everyone has the same love for DCTT. Compared to 10 years ago, the current DCTT movement in the province has expanded rapidly. The province has now about 60 DCTT clubs with nearly 1,000 members. Each locality has its own clubs. There are also spontaneous group of DCTT’s lovers. These places are where professional and nonprofessional artists playing and singing amateur music together. Thanks to these playgrounds, DCTT has been spread and beloved by most people. According to provincial Cultural Center’s Director Nguyen Thi Minh Nghia, professional dedication, love for this kind of art of professional and nonprofessional artists in the province have created the expansion of DCTT.Additionally, contests, festivals, shows of DCTT have contributed to the development of this music. These activities have been maintained annually at district-level and province-level; have been big festive days for DCTT’s enthusiasts to compete their talent, skills as well as exchange, learn experiences each other. Compared to some other neighboring provinces, movements of DCTT in Binh Duong province enhance more strongly in terms of professional artists and enthusiasts. Besides, DCTT has been taken care by the local government, cultural sector.
