US urged to reduce trade barriers against Vietnam

State President Truong Tan Sang has proposed that the US Congress support the opening of its market and reduce trade barriers against Vietnamese goods imported into the US.
While receiving Patrick Leahy, President pro tempore of the US Senate, in Hanoi on April 18, Sang also asked the US to early recognise Vietnam’s market economy status and back ongoing negotiations of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement between the two countries.
Vietnam attaches great importance to developing the comprehensive partnership with the US, considering the US a leading partner, said Sang.
He welcomed the US’s commitment to long-term cooperation for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the Asia-Pacific region.
He said both Vietnam and the US share many bilateral, regional and international interests in economic development, counterterrorism and climate change mitigation, as well as in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
It is high time for the two countries to further develop their relations, Sang told Patrick Leahy.
He thanked the Senate for strengthening comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and the US, including overcoming the consequences of the past war, and said Vietnam will do its utmost to address issues of mutual concern.
The President also spoke highly of Leahy’s contributions to dioxin remediation and unexploded ordnance clearance in Vietnam, citing functional rehabilitation for dioxin victims and assistance for disabled people as convincing proofs.
For his part, Patrick Leahy noted bilateral relations have grown positively in various areas, especially after their comprehensive partnership was established during State President Sang’s US visit in July 2013.
He voiced the US’s desire to increase cooperation with Vietnam, especially in economics, trade, investment, science-technology, education-training, and in dealing with war aftermath, including dioxin remediation and unexploded ordnance clearance.
Leahy laid a strong emphasis on the growing ties of the US and Vietnam in contributing to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world at large.
Leahy and other Senators also acknowledged Vietnam’s Doi Moi (Renewal) achievements, primarily in poverty reduction, thus improving people’s living conditions.
Patrick Leahy began a five-day visit to Vietnam on April 16. He held talks with National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, met with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, and exchanged with university students in Hanoi.
