Vietnam AYG team brings home two gold medals

Nguyen Thi Anh Vien led the quest for a Vietnam gold medal at the second Asian Youth Games (AYG II) going on in Nanjing, China on August 21 with an excellent performance in the girls’ 200m backstroke race.

After missing out on the 100m backstroke top title on Tuesday, Vien redeemed herself with the 200m backstroke crown, clocking in a best time of 2:12.65, followed by Im Dasol of the Republic of Korea (2:15.09) and Hong Kong’s Wan Ching Man Andrea (2:19.82).

Female long jumper Nguyen Thi Truc Mai added another gold to the Vietnam medal tally after beating her career’s best distance of 5m90, and surpassing Chinese silver medalist (5m78) and Thai bronze winner (5m61).

Tran Thi Mai and Nguyen Thi Lan contributed two silver for Vietnam in the girls’ 200m steeplechase and 100m hurdles, respectively, while taekwondo artist Truong Thi Kim Tuyen brought home a bronze in the girls’ under-47kg.

As of yesterday, Vietnam has won a total of two gold, five silver and one bronze medals and climbed to eighth position in the provisional standings.
