Vietnam bags gold medal at regional chess champs

Vietnamese players won one gold, one silver and one bronze medals at the 2011 Asian Individual Chess Championships, which was held in Mashhad, Iran from May 1-11.

 In the blitz chess event, Hoang Thi Bao Tram took the gold after defeating her stronger Chinese rival Tan Zhongyi in the final match on May 11.

 Meanwhile, Pham Le Thao Nguyen (seed No. 11) and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (seed No. 8, elo 2,635) also won silver and bronze medals in traditional chess events.

 With these results, Nguyen and Son will be Asia’s representatives to the 2011 World Chess Cup scheduled for later this year in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.
