Vietnam celebrates first gold at Asian Games

Martial artist Le Bich Phuong defeated her Japanese competitor Kobayashi Miki in the women’s karate competition on Nov. 25 to gain the first gold medal for Vietnam at the 16 th Asian Games (ASIAD) in Guangzhou , China .

 

Miki took the lead first, then Bich Phuong fought strongly, bringing the score back to a 1-1 draw in the tense final at the Guangdong gymnasium, before scoring three points to make it 4-1. Miki was determined to gain more points during the remaining time but scored only an additional two points, with Bich Phuong emerging as the victor at 4-3.

 

After twelve days of competition, Vietnam has won 1 gold, 17 silver and 14 bronze medals, ranking 22 nd out of 45 countries in the medal tally./.
