Vietnam hosts UNESCO consultation meeting

Representatives from the UNESCO Committees in the Asia-Pacific region attended their consultation meeting in Thanh Hoa province on June 16 to gather member countries’ opinions on the UN organisation’s priority areas in the coming years.

At the event, Eric Falt, Assistant Director General for External Relations and Public Information, said the meeting is of special importance as the Asia-Pacific region makes up more than 60 percent of the world’s population.  

UNESCO should strengthen cooperation with regional member countries to cope with challenges and meet their citizens’ needs in the 21st century, said Falt.

He confirmed that in whatever circumstances the UN organisation pursues the goal of promoting peace, reducing poverty, and facilitating sustainable development and dialogues between cultures.

Nguyen Thanh Son, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, noted that Vietnam is an active and responsible member of the UN organisation, and the organisation of the meeting shows Vietnam’s strong support to UNESCO in the face of global difficulties.

After the meeting, delegates will attend a ceremony to present the UNESCO title World Cultural Heritage to the Ho Dynasty Citadel in Thanh Hoa province in the evening.

The consultation meeting takes place every two years to gather opinions from the organisation’s 198 member countries. A similar meeting was held in Hanoi in 2006.
