Vietnam is strongly committed to joining hands with the International community to promote a model of sustainable development, considering it a requirement throughout the socio-economic development process.
On October 5, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attended a series of meetings on increasing the efficiency of the global economic governance mechanisms and sustainable development, as part of his activities at the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 8).
Mr Dung highlighted ASEAN and Vietnam’s substantial contributions to dealing with issues of common concern and making proposals aimed at helping ASEM become a driving force behind sustainable development.
PM Dung underscored the need to share experiences, draw up development strategies, create a model of sustainable development, ensure social welfare for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people, and support sustainable development programmes underway at sub-regional and regional levels on both continents.
Sustainable development is considered more urgent than ever for every country and has become a global necessity. Sustainable development includes three components: economic development, social development and environmental protection. These components are interconnected and make people the core of development.
In this spirit, Mr Dung proposed organising an ASEM forum on green growth and an ASEM forum on social security networks. These two new initiatives won the applause of ASEAM member countries including the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and the Republic of Korea.
Earlier the same day, at a meeting on increasing the efficiency of the global economic governance mechanisms, Mr Dung said Vietnam supports continuous efforts to renew them on an equal, democratic and more efficient basis.
PM Dung proposed measures to increase the efficiency of global economic governance, including promoting close cooperation in creating economic-financial policies, calling on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) to reform by increasing the proportion of voting rights of developing countries and transitional economies.
Later in the day, PM Dung and heads of state and government leaders from Asian and European countries were scheduled to attend sessions on regional and global issues, people-to-people exchanges, promoting ASEM’s image and the future of ASEM.
Later that night (Vietnam time), ASEM will hold a closing session after the two days’ sitting.
