Vietnam sees foreign investors as friends

Update: 24-09-2010 | 00:00:00

Foreign investors coming to Vietnam are not only seen as investors but also as friends, said State President Nguyen Minh Triet while meeting with representatives of various major US businesses at the Global Investment Conference (GIC) in New York on September 22.

The event also attracted leading US businesses in Vietnam such as Lockheed Martin, Exxon Mobil, Boeing, Raytheon, Procter&Gamble and Chevron along with economic analysts from popular US universities.

US businesses acknowledged Vietnam’s efforts to improve its investment environment and administrative procedures, maintain economic stability and cope with the global economic crisis. However, they pointed out some problems, including a poor infrastructure, high interest rates and a lack of information. Despite this, US businesses still consider Vietnam a leading market in the region.

President Triet said that during the 25-year Doi Moi (Renewal) process, Vietnam has reached an economic growth rate of over 7 percent and is integrating deeper into the world economy after entering the World Trade Organisation (WTO) three years ago. The country is seen as having a dynamic economy which is capturing the attention of foreign investors. In the last two years, US investors have increased their investment in Vietnam, making the US the country’s leading investor, said Mr Triet.

Regarding the advantages of the investment environment in Vietnam, President Triet said, “Vietnam is creating a favourable investment environment to call for more investors. With a young and abundant workforce with technical skills, the country can meet all investors’ requirements. Vietnam is a large consumer market and investors in Vietnam can sell their products in the country or export to other nations.”

Vietnam is striving to keep pace with other nations by cooperating more effectively with foreign partners. Therefore, Vietnam always respects foreign investors and pays attention to their interests. Vietnam’s leaders and relevant agencies are willing to help foreign investors iron out snags, Mr Triet noted.

The same day, President Triet visited the Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the UN and met with several overseas Vietnamese representatives and American friends.
