Vietnam to boost its profile at WEF

Update: 23-01-2010 | 00:00:00

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will attend the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, from January 27-31 to promote Vietnam’s image within the world community.

Mr Dung’s participation in the Davos forum demonstrates the special attention the WEF and its CEOs pay to Vietnam – a dynamic economy, which has bottomed out from the global economic recession and is showing signs of a quick recovery.

Vietnam is expected to take centre stage at the WEF 2010 as it is chairing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which has established a higher profile in the international arena. As the ASEAN chair, it is taking concrete steps toward building a single ASEAN Community and an East Asian Community.

In addition, Vietnam’s position has been elevated globally after it fulfilled its duties as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2008-09.

For the first time Vietnam will host the World Economic Forum on East Asia slated for Ho Chi Minh City on June 7. The event is of great significance for Vietnam economically and politically as the world economy is picking up and East Asia is taking the lead in the recovery process.

This is a golden chance for the country to polish its image, attract foreign investment and create conditions for local businesses to exchange and expand trade with foreign partners.

WEF Davos 2010 will bring together more than 200 government leaders and officials, 1,000 CEOs and hundreds of scholars and media workers from around the world. Participants will make in-depth analyses, draw experience from the global financial and economic turmoil and discuss measures to ensure that the global economy is on track for recovery.

PM Dung is scheduled to leave Hanoi on January 24 for Switzerland where he will hold working sessions with leaders of the United Nations and the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
