On May 27, the Ministry of Education and Training held a ceremony to honour five Vietnamese students for their excellent performance at the 2013 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiads (APIO 2013).

These students won five medals, including a gold, a silver and three bronze, at the Olympiads.

Accordingly, Vietnam ranked fourth among the five gold medal winners.

The gold medal went to Vu Dinh Quang Dat, a 12th grader from Hanoi University of Science’s High School for Gifted Students.

Nguyen Phan Quang Minh, a Hai Duong-born 11th grader from Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted, took the silver.

The three bronze medals were given to Nguyen Duc Nam, a 12th grader from Hanoi-Amsterdam High School; Thai Dinh Phuc, a 12th grader from Phan Boi Chau High School for Gifted Students in Nghe An; and Pham Thai Son, an 11th grader from Hanoi National University of Education’s High School for the Gifted.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Vinh Hien said that this was a remarkable result and the pride of the Vietnamese students’ delegation and informatics teaching at the schools. He said the competition is an intellectual playing field for all students, adding that informatics is still a new sector in Vietnam; therefore younger generations’ contributions are needed to improve its application in the future.

This year’s Olympiad was the first to be held online, with 500 contestants participating from 21 countries and territories./.
