Vigilant against foot-and-month disease

Foot-and-month disease is developing complicatedly. An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has been discovered in Thuan An town in southern Binh Duong province. Before the complicated development of foot-and-mouth disease, the propaganda work to raise awareness against the disease among breeders need to be intensified.

 

Propaganda about foot-and-mouth disease needs to be realized deeply and widely to raise awareness against the disease among breeding households.

Foot-and-mouth disease under complicated development

As of March 6, twenty five provinces nationwide hit by foot-and-mouth disease have not yet gone 21 days and the disease is developing complicatedly, according to the National Animal Health Department.

Southern Binh Duong province has just found an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. The province is now at high risk of the outbreaks of the disease as it lies on streets that cattle are transported from other localities to HCM city. The unusual weather conditions will also promote the spread of the disease.

According to the report of the province’s agriculture and rural development sector, the whole province, as of late 2010, had more than 35,000 buffaloes, cows and more than 385,000 pigs. The vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease in pigs always got high result over the past time while the ratio of buffaloes and cows getting vaccination against the disease was low, due to shortcomings.

Raising awareness against foot-and-mouth disease

Nguyen Thanh Binh, Head of the Epidemiology Division under provincial Animal Health Department said: “Provincial Animal Health Department will strength cooperation with the Animal Health Departments of other localities to catch more information about the development of foot-and-mouth disease; tighten control of the quarantine and transport of cattle; recommend the local breeding households to make measures about safe biology in animal husbandry…”.

To minimize losses caused by foot-and-mouth disease, the local breeders should not to hide outbreaks or purchase, sell and transport sick animals, or dispose of them in public places…The prevention of foot-and-mouth disease will gain high results if there is good cooperation between the local functional agencies and breeders.
