When nobody is left behind

Update: 09-07-2010 | 00:00:00

Health Department Director Huynh Van Nhi grants decoration of

provincial People’s Committee to elite individuals in 2009.

Demographic activities in Vietnam have significantly reduced births and limit population growth thanks to efforts and help of the Party, the State, agencies, and the people. As a contributing province, Binh Duong province has proficiently reduced births and become one of 16 provinces meeting replacement level fertility and one in five provinces with highest Human Development Index (HDI).

So as to successfully implement national demography and birth control programs, on annual basis, province’s Population and Birth Control assigns its grassroots in towns and districts to monitor demographic campaigns by setting up plans and monitoring teams and to continue allocating officials. The same scheme is applied to lower levels through allocation and guidelines.

Combined activities are organized including training courses, seminar discussions, communicative groups and clubs, and commitments of officials, party members, and the people to population and birth control policies.

Thanks to full and effective cooperation of all levels, as well as close ties with involved agencies, population programs gained significant results, helping the province to effectively control births and maintain replacement level fertility.

In the first 6 months of 2010, birth control methods are ensured and meet 103.78% of projection for the year after first propaganda stage. Localities have encouraged people to apply those methods along with gift offerings.

Despite achievements in terms of replacement level fertility, Director Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoi of province’s Population and Birth Control is still perplexed by the fact that birth control is not very sustainable. Ratio of third births in families increases by 0.97% than 2009 while the two most modern birth control methods have not applied much.

In the face of the mentioned challenges, Director Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoi called for more combined policies to firmly maintain replacement level fertility by increasing education and propaganda for the sake of better public awareness and resolving problems in demographic structure, population density, quality and scale of population, etc.
