Indonesians protest Trump’s Jerusalem move

Update: 12-12-2017 | 11:12:57

About 10,000 Indonesians have protested outside the US Embassy in Jakarta against US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

According to the  AP news agency, protesters carried banners reading “Free Jerusalem and Palestinians” and “We are with the Palestinians” during the protest, which was organised by  Indonesia’s Islamist Prosperous Justice Party.

Indonesia, the world’s biggest Muslim majority nation, has long been a strong supporter of Palestinians and has no diplomatic ties with Israel.

Previously, Indonesian President Joko Widodo strongly condemned Trump’s move, which he described as a violation of UN resolutions.

Trump, on December 6, decided to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, calling it an important step towards peace in the region.

Arabian and Muslim nations have opposed the move to show support for Palestine.

Jerusalem is considered sacred in the main Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.-VNA
