Vietnam opposes China’s holding of election on Tam Sa island

Update: 04-10-2016 | 15:25:36

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Hai Binh on October 3 responded to reporters’ questions on Vietnam’s reaction to China holding the election for the 2nd Municipal Congress of “Sansha city” and conducting patrols in the waters off the Hoang Sa (Paracel) islands.

Vietnam has sufficient legal and historical evidence proving its sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos. China’s holding of  the election for  the Municipal Congress of the so-called Sansha city which was illegally set up by China and conducting illegal patrols in the waters off the Paracels seriously violates the country's sovereignty.

These illegal acts cannot change the reality of Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos, Binh said.

"Vietnam resolutely opposes and demands China respect its sovereignty, immediately halt its wrongful actions and seriously abide by the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the east Sea (DOC) and the Agreement on fundamental principles guiding the settlement of sea-related issues between Vietnam and China," he added.
