Update: 02-09-2012 | 00:00:00

The Vietnamese men’s and women’s teams both gained important points after thrashing their Maltanian opponents in the third round of the World Chess Olympiad on August 31.

The men's team easily earned all four points for the Le Quang Liem vs. Colin Pace, GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son vs. Joseph Gauci, Nguyen Van Huy vs. Robert Zerafa and Dao Thien Hai vs. Clarence Psaila matches.

Thanks to the  three successive victories by Liem, the team now has a total of 8.5 points and has jumped to 39th place after being out of the top 60 in the second round.

They hope to extend their winning streak after facing underdog Indonesia in the next round.

Indonesia is seeded 68th at the tournament and has only one Grand Master, Susanto Megaranto with an Elo of 2529, much lower than his rival GM Le Quang Liem (Elo 2693).

Meanwhile, the women's team of Pham Le Thao Nguyen, Nguyen Thi Mai Hung, Hoang Thi Nhu Y and Pham Bich Ngoc defeated the Albanian squad 3-1 to chalk up a total of 7.5 points.

The four players also bagged four points in the first round against Ireland but lost 0.5-3.5 to Hungary which is led by Vietnamese GM Hoang Thanh Trang, in the second round.

They will play Lithuania, which is rated at the same level, in the fourth round scheduled for the evening of September 1.
