Vietnam has two new mathematics academicians

Professor Phan Quoc Khanh and Hoang Xuan Phu are the two Vietnamese scientists who have been elected as academicians in the field of mathematics by the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).

TWAS has announced a list of 52 newly elected academicians of 10 different fields. Particularly, in the field of mathematics, Vietnam has two top scientists. The two others are two Brazilian researchers - Lopes Artur Oscar and Ivan Shestakov.

Professor Phan Quoc Khanh was born in 1946. He is head of the Mathematics Faculty of the National University of Ho Chi Minh City. He is considered a leading mathematician of Vietnam. Professor Khanh is an expert in optimization theory.

According to the website of the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, Professor Khanh defended his doctoral thesis in 1978 and Doctor of Science in 1988 at the Mathematical Institute, Academy of Sciences of Poland.

The results of his research led to important developments in the field of vector optimization, equilibrium problems and variational inequalities. He is also Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Mathematics Association and a member of the American Mathematical Society.

Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Phu was born in 1956, worked at the Institute of Mathematics. He studied control theory and optimization, and analytics applications of these fields.

He defended his doctoral thesis in 1983 and Doctor of Science in 1987 at the University of Leipzig, Germany. He is the editor of the Vietnam Journal of Mathematics and the members of the Committee of Developing Countries of the International Mathematical Union (CDC-IMU).

He is also an academician of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the Bavaria Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Germany.

The two professors are also members of the Scientific Council of the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics of Vietnam.

The TWAS has 1,110 members, including Vietnamese famous scientists as Professors Nguyen Van Hieu, Dao Vong Duc, Ngo Viet Trung, Ha Huy Khoai, Dao Trong Thi, Le Tuan Hoa, Phan Quoc Khanh and Hoang Xuan Phu.
