Vietnam supports international peace and security

Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh has emphasized that Vietnam is a trustful partner and responsible member of the international community.

FM Minh delivered an important speech at the 66th United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 27, making clear Vietnam’s view on regional and international issues.

He said that peace, cooperation and development is a common trend in the world, but, tension and conflicts are growing in many places of all continents due to irresolvable differences.

In addition, climate change, disasters, epidemics, trans-national crime and threats of mass destructive weapon proliferation and international terrorism are major challenges which require each UN member country to share responsible for dealing with them.

FM Minh noted that the unstable recovery of the world economy and economic depression have brought the developing countries into confrontation with unfair trade conditions and acts of protectionism, preventing them from fulfilling the UN Millennium Development Goals.

So the key to success lies squarely in each country’s efforts, international cooperation and multilateralisation based on the basic principles of respect for international law, UN charter and each country’s interest, the Vietnamese diplomat said.

He declared Vietnam always supports peace and security in the world and called on the UN to continue joining efforts to settle civil wars and conflicts, especially in northern Africa and the Middle East, and prevent new outbreaks in other places. “We must cooperate to promote dialogue culture to settle conflicts in a peaceful manner,” FM Minh said.

FM Minh voiced support for Palestine’s application for being recognition as an official UN member. He affirmed that Vietnam recorgnised the Palestine State in 1988 and always supports its struggle and efforts to become a UN member.

Vietnam once again demands the US end its economic embargo against Cuba. As an advocate of contributions to peace and security in the East Sea, Vietnam is committed to persisting in dialogues to settle disputes in a peaceful manner in line with international law, and the Law of Sea Treaty in 1982, FM Minh emphasized.

Also as a trustful partner and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam will continue to join efforts with the international community and the UN to maintain peace and stability in the region and the world.
