Improving admission quality to 10th grade

After the end of school year, while students of other grades are in summer, 9th grade students have to prepare for the entrance exam to 10th grade. Department of Education & Training (DOET) has conducted this exam so that it can classify students since 2008. Teachers and students of Chu Van An secondary school are reviewing for the entrance exam to the 10th grade Improving the quality of admissionAccording to the DOET, after graduation of secondary school, 70% of students will be enrolled in high schools; the rest will enter vocational, training schools or continuing education centers. Therefore, the quality of high school students would be improved, and simultaneously weaker students could have an appropriate path from the beginning. In order to enter the 10th grade, 9th grade students has been learning from the start of this school year, and now they are racing against the time. Secondary schools also help students by opening of review classes. Vice principal of Chu Van An secondary school Ms. Doan Thi Thanh Binh informed that their school had 316 students registering review classes, which were divided into groups according to students’ learning capacity, notably there were classes with strengthening programs for good students to enroll to Hung Vuong Gifted high school.The entrance exam will take place from June 27th to 30th. Contestants must do tests of 3 subjects: philology, mathematics, and English. Subjects of Hung Vuong Gifted high school are: philology, mathematics, English and one or two specialized subjects. According to Deputy Director of DOET, the Department will admit to gifted high schools without testing students achieving the first, second, third prize of provincial Excellent Student competition 2013 (not applied for subject of civics) and meeting these requirements: 4 excellent years of secondary school, excellent result of secondary school graduation exam, accumulated 9th grade GPA of specialized subjects is 9.0 or higher, of philology is 7.5 or higher, of mathematics is 9.0 or higher, of English is 8.0 or higher for specialized subjects of nature science; and accumulated 9th grade GPS of philology is 8.0 or higher, of mathematics is 7.5 or higher and of English is 8.0 or higher for social science subjects.Effective classificationSecondary schools carried out vocational guidance for students through classes, meetings under the flag, class meetings hosted by head teachers. Policies of classification has been implemented since 2008, thus parents and students have had changes in thoughts to select career path being suitable to family economic situation through vocational training. However, after 5 years of implementation, some parents still believe that their offspring must finish high school then start vocational training. Therefore, schools held parents meetings in last April, May to disseminate classification policies. Principal of Vinh Hoa secondary school of Phu Giao district Mr. Nguyen Van Su said, the school grouped weak students, explained learning capacity of students to parents and counseled the right path in order not to waste so much time. Besides, the school coordinated with vocational secondary schools of Agriculture, Forestry, Culture Art and Phu Giao vocational school to provide career guidance for 9th grade students.Expectedly, in 2013-2014 school year, 6,940 students will be enrolled to 10th grade, which is equivalent to 70% of graduated students including 300 students of 10th grade of Hung Vuong Gifted high school.
