Thuan An strongly invests in urban agriculture

In a bid to increase the local agricultural production value, along with maintaining orchards, Thuan An town is promoting urban agricultural models.

Over 150 households getting involved in urban agricultural models

Thuan An town’s land use structure has so far had a lot of considerable changes with farming land reducing to 2,785.3 hectares, due to rapid urban urbanization plus many other reasons.

Truong Cong Thach, Deputy Head of Thuan An town’s Division of Economics said that apart from maintaining the local area of orchards, the town will attach special importance to fostering urban agricultural models towards building sustainable urban ecological areas.

Accordingly, the town has boosted the implementation of support policies as well as bracing up households to change to production models in line with the local real situation. The town has till now had a total of more than 150 households getting involved in urban agricultural models with more than 20 hectares…

High-economic efficiency

Thanks to the shift of the local plant and animal structure implemented actively, urban agricultural models in Thuan An town have helped farmers create agricultural products with high value, bringing them a stable source of income. The average income of one hectare of farming land in the town is more than VND80million per year. Especially, several models on planting ornamental trees, safe vegetables; breeding crocodiles…bring farmers high revenue at more than VND500million, VND200million, VND1billion per hectare, respectively.

The whole town has also had a total of 52 orchid growing facilities, 24 dia fish breeding facilities, 11 rabbit-raising facilities…supported for urban agricultural development.

Vo Hieu Trung, a farmer in An Son commune’s An Phu hamlet said that together with planting fruit trees, he has taken full advantage of the remaining land for orchid growing, helping increase his family’s revenue. Thanks to having sci-tech transfer from the local Agricultural Promotion Center and Plant Protection Station, he has enjoyed lots of advantages in orchid growing. He can now earn VND5million-VND10million from each orchid harvesting batch.

Or, other farmer Huynh Van Muoi in Vinh Phu ward’s Dong quarter said that his family has made the best of empty land to develop a model of breeding NewZealand rabbits with the average profit of VND4million-VND5million per batch.

With its orientation on urban development to 2020 and vision to 2030, the town has set targets of reaching the annual average growth of 1.5% in agro-forestry and fisheries production value, the annual average urban agricultural production value of one hectare of farming land of VND80million-VND100million; having agricultural products under Vietgap standards; maintaining orchards and improving their quality; selecting, developing tourism models…
