Update: 27-11-2020 | 11:19:35

Vietnam supports the sides involved to continue negotiations for long-term solutions for Syria within the framework of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese mission to the United Nations, has said.

At the UN monthly briefing on Syria

The committee — established a year ago under United Nations auspices with the goal of forming a new constitution — is set to bring together the parties to the conflict in Geneva for a fourth session from 30 November to 4 December.

In his address at a UN monthly briefing on Syria on November 25, Quy said constructive dialogues should be maintained, reiterating that the only solution to the Syrian crisis is through a Syrian-led political process facilitated by the United Nations, with respect to the international law, the UN Charter, and Syria’s independence and territorial sovereignty and integrity.

About the humanitarian issue in the nation, the diplomat noted a special attention should be paid to boosting capacity in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, tackling food security challenges, and preparing for surging demand for humanitarian aid in upcoming winter months.

At the function, UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Khawla Matar said the agenda for next week’s Constitutional Committee meeting and its fifth meeting slated for January 2021 present an important opportunity to engage in good faith.

Ramesh Rajasingham, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, noted that 6.7 million people in Syria are internally displaced, a third of which lack proper shelter ahead of the approaching winter season.

Crisis and conflict in Syria has entered their 10th year, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths and injuries, and displacing millions of people./.
