All the four members of the Vietnamese team won medals, including one gold, at the 44th International Chemistry Olympiad that closed Monday in the United States, according to the Ministry of Education and Training.

The gold medalist is Pham Dang Huy, a 12th-grader at Tran Phu Specialized High School located in the northern province of Hai Phong while two silvers went to Nguyen Van Phuong, enrolled at Nguyen Hue Specialized High School in Hanoi, and Nguyen Viet Hoang, an enrollee at Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, also in the capital.

The other bronze medal was awarded to Tran Thi Mai Huong, a student at Le Hong Phong Specialized High School situated in the northern province of Nam Dinh.

This is an encouraging result as Vietnam bagged no golds at the two previous competitions in Turkey and Japan where the country secured two silvers and two bronzes each, an education official said.

The International Chemistry Olympiad is an annual academic competition for high school students. This year’s edition was attended by 283 contenders coming from 72 countries and territories.

Vietnamese students had also grabbed fifteen medals – including three golds, five silvers, and seven bronzes – at the likes of physics, math, and biology contests this year
