Badminton star Tien Minh climbs to world No 5

Update: 04-12-2010 | 00:00:00

Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh has climbed to fifth place in the latest world’s men’s singles rankings -- the highest-ever ranking in his competition career.

He jumped up from the eighth place last week on the weekly ranking table released by the International Badminton Federation. Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana has moved up a place to fourth.

Surprisingly, China’s Lin Dan -- nicknamed Super Dan -- who recently won the Asian Games gold medal, has fallen to seventh place from fourth.

Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia remains on top followed by Peter Gade of Denmark (68,795), and Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia (67,591 points).

Ho Chi Minh City-born Minh, 26, was the first Vietnamese to play in the Olympics.

In 2008 he won the International Vietnam Open, the Vietnam Satellite, and Malaysia Satellite tournaments.
