Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and a Vietnamese delegation attended the World Economic Forum on East Asia 2012, which focused on “Shaping the Region’s Future Through Connectivity.”

The forum held in Bangkok, Thailand, attracted the participation of leaders from many countries in the region, the WTO Director-General, the Director-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and over 600 senior government officials, top business executives, scholars and leaders from 50 countries around the world.
Attending the forum, Vietnam aimed at implementing the policy on active international integration and actively contributing to discussions on promoting cooperation and connectivity in East Asia, especially in the fields of its concern, such as economic-trade connectivity and cooperation to maintain and consolidate peace in the region.
With the above targets, the Prime Minister delivered an important speech, centering on the forum’s theme: “Opportunities and Challenges in Shaping the Region’s Future through Connectivity”. He had meetings as well with leaders of other countries and international organizations, including Thailand’s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and the WEF President Klaus Schwab.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung informed the delegates about the economic-social development in Vietnam and a message on international integration expressed through the reality of the active and initiative participation of Vietnam in the process of building the ASEAN community and many cooperation frameworks and mechanisms in East Asia and in the world.
The Prime Minister shared opinions and put forward important proposals on regional cooperation and affirmed the importance of regional cooperation that served as a factor to promote economic-social development in East Asian countries, making a contribution to creating the dynamism in the region.
He said that countries should ensure the “synchronism” in regional cooperation, from participating in cooperation to creating harmony in policies, laws and procedures of economic connectivity projects; and countries should further promote connectivity cooperation frameworks, including ASEAN+1, ASEAN+3, the East Asia Summit, with ASEAN playing the central role.
The Prime Minister affirmed the importance of strengthening sub-regional connectivity, particularly the Mekong sub-region and stressed that it should promote “the adaptability of cooperation and connectivity in East Asia through cooperation among countries to prevent the risk of economic, financial and monetary crisis, promoting trade, fighting against trade protectionism, and effectively cope with increasing challenges, such as climate change, natural disasters, water resource security, energy and food security.
Prime Minister Dung emphasized that the region should ensure an environment of peace, sustainability and development, including peace, stability, security and safety and marine freedom on the East Sea; solving disputes through peaceful measures and respecting international laws and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and fully implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and the Code of Conduct (COC).
The participation of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the Vietnamese delegation was highly appraised by other countries, making a contribution to the success of the forum, and the peace, stability and development in the region.
