National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung has asked HCM City to take the lead in the country's process of industrialization and modernization.
Speaking at a working session with the City’s leaders on August 24, the chief legislator underlined the city’s efforts to iron out snags and take measures to curb inflation, promote economic growth, ensure social welfare, reduce poverty, upgrade transport infrastructure and maintain political stability, social order and security.
He stressed the need for greater efforts to remove obstacles for production and business, settle bank’s bad debts, stabilise prices and promote consumption to establish a firm foundation for developing the financial and monetary markets.
Chairman Hung urged the City to review its master plan for technical and infrastructure systems and pay attention to its resources to serve national industrialization and modernization, while also ensuring social order and security.
HCM City proposed that the legislature amend the land laws to clearly define the criteria for urban planning and land use, as well as construction and environmental planning.
According to the HCM City People’s Committee report, the City’s economy has shown signs of recovery with 8.1 percent year-on-year GDP growth.
However, the negative impact of the global economic crisis is now placing great pressure on its economic growth, according to the report.
