Update: 03-07-2012 | 00:00:00

Duong Thi Viet Anh, 22, will be the second representative of Vietnam's track-and-field team for the upcoming London Olympics after winning on July 1 at the Asian All Star Athletics Meet in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

She leapt a career best 1.92m, achieving the Olympic B Standard which was enough for her to compete in London this month.

Her previous personal best was 1.90m which she set at last November’s Southeast Asian Games 26 in Indonesia.

The Bac Lieu province-born athlete is one of Vietnam’s hopefuls at the 3-days Kazakhstan tournament, although many people had written off her Olympic chances after she failed to come close to her best in recent competition.

Anh surprised her critics with her jump and became the second track-and-field athlete after walker Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc and the last member of the Vietnam team for London.

There will be 19 Vietnamese athletes competing in 11 sports at the Olympics, starting on July 27. Most of them are in intensive training abroad.

The Vietnam team will comprise of 58 members including athletes, trainers and officials, led by Mr Lam Quang Thanh, Deputy Head of the National Sports Administration under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Vietnamese track-and-field athletes and gymnasts will arrive in London on July 10, followed by the rest of the team 10 days later.

Mr Duong Duc Thuy, head of track-and-field department (the National Sports Administration) shared Duong Thi Viet Anh’s success was a surprise for Vietnam as her faced challenges after SEA Games due to a injury. It could be an athlete's mentality./.
