Instituting friendly schools, active pupils to improve educational quality

Since 2008-2009 school year, educational and training sector has started to launch emulation movement “Instituting friendly schools, active pupils” (FS-AP) at all provincial schools. After 5 years, the most remarkable achievement is that teacher’s responsibilities have been heightened, learning awareness of pupils has been improved, and responsibility of the community for educational activities has been bettered.

Since then, provincial educational facilities have been invested more, namely, school yards, class rooms were adorned with the green of trees, making the appearance of schools to be more beautiful. Nguyen Thi Minh Khai secondary school gathering all four elements: green, clean, beautiful and safe, makes people feel comfortable and friendly. Despite its small campus, the school still has space for vegetation, which receives positive responses from parents of pupils. Award-winning pictures of pupils, photos of school activities are decorated at stairs and corridors. Famous sayings, images, biographies are hung crowded places in school to convey Vietnamese history to pupils.Safety is a vital feature at schools. Deputy Director of Education & Training Department Mr. Tran Hieu said, the sector has cooperated related agencies to launch the action plan on prevention of violent online games for pupils; arrange for 100% pupils to make commitments not to participate in these games; coordinate with parents to manage pupil’s schedule; ask localities to control closely internet services etc.A friendly school is a place where teachers innovates teaching methods in accordance with pupil’s ages. An My high school’s principal Nguyen Thi Tuyet said, teachers at this school are required a innovated project curbing passive teaching, transferring to active teaching and learning, in which teachers and pupils working together.In addition to widen knowledge, pupils are also given training of life skills through cultural, sport, outside activities, contests. Schools also organize folk games for pupils. Furthermore, schools collect documents introducing local historic relics, revolutionary traditions; organize visits and taking care of historic places, cemeteries; support Vietnamese heroic mothers, martyr’s families. Principal of Binh My primary school (Tan Uyen district) Le Thi Hai said, apart from educating pupils on local revolutionary traditions, taking care of martyr’s memorial on big holidays, the school organizes annually visits of historic places combining with tourism sites for pupils of 3rd, 4th, 5th classes to learn more practical experiences.Since the launching of movement FS-AP, educational quality has been increased. Number of goof pupils is higher, pupils engage in contests, quality of 10th-grade entrance exam is also improved. Department of Education & Training Director Duong The Phuong assessed, all schools, large or small, have participated actively in this movement, namely, investing in green space, cultivating teachers and pupils. Since 2013, this movement transferred to action plan with the goal: “School is home, teachers are the second parents, and pupils have a strong attachment to school” to be successful.
