Khau Vai love market scheduled in late April

Update: 30-03-2014 | 00:00:00

The annual Khau Vai love market, a unique ethnic festival dedicated to ex-couples, will be held from April 24 – 26 in Khau Vai commune, Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province.

Legend has it that a couple who loved each other very much but could not live together made the promise to meet once a year in Khau Vai. Since then, the festival has been held every year on the 27th day of the third lunar month for ex-lovers to reunite, making it an appealing tourist destination for visitors to Dong Van Karst Plateau.

The three-day event includes a beauty contest, a nightingale fighting competition, a horse race, and a stage performance reenacting the origin of the festival undertaken by artists from the Vietnam Cai Luong (reformed theatre).

Examples of the cultural practices and daily activities of ethnic groups in Ha Giang province are also scheduled at the festival, including a drum dance by Giay ethnic artists and the making of khen (panpipes) by Hmong people.

In addition, visitors will have a chance to participate in folk games and enjoy indigenous dishes and specialties of people living on the plateau.
