Update: 03-10-2013 | 00:00:00
Vietnam’s international chess grandmaster Le Quang Liem has jumped from 45th to 34th in the world chess rankings. According to the World Chess Federation (FIDE), he was awarded ten points to his Elo ratings, from 2702 to 2712, in October compared to September rankings. In Asia, Liem beat Harikrisnan (India, Elo 2709) and So Wesley (the Philippines, Elo 2706) to come in fifth after world champions Viswanathan Anand (India), and Wang Hao, Wuang Yue and Dung Liren, all from China. Liem, who is studying in the US, will compete in the Spice Cup from September 15-19. He finished first in 2011 and second in 2012. If he performs well, his position in the world chess rankings is expected to further improve. Meanwhile, female Vietnamese players Nguyen Thi Mai Hung and Vo Thi Kim Phung fell in October world rankings due to their unsuccessful performance at the world’s U20 tournament in Turkey. Mai Hung dropped 14 notches to 57th and Kim Phung slipped 14 positions to 61st. Vietnamese player Hoang Thi Nhu Y is holding the highest position in the world rankings’ young list, standing at 50th. In the women’s list, Vietnam’s No.1 player Pham Le Thao Nguyen is now placed 72nd with Elo 2389. Vietnamese-born player Hoang Thanh Trang jumped to 19th with Elo 2495. VOV
