THE Spanish striker took his goal tally to four goals in two games and boss Rafa Benitez insists Chelsea are seeing what he's capable of because they're playing to his strengths.
RAFAEL BENITEZ last night took the credit for Fernando Torres’ dramatic return to form.
The £50 milllion man bagged a double as Chelsea claimed their first Premier League win since October.
It took the Spaniard’s tally to four in two games after his midweek goals in the Europa League.
Benitez, who brought Torres to England and bossed him at his peak in Liverpool, knew Chelsea chiefs hoped the pair could find the magic formula again.
Torres looked back to his assured self – even potting a penalty as the Blues romped into a 3-0 lead.
Benitez said: “It’s fair to say we are watching a Fernando with more confidence and with more belief, and at the same time, the team is the same way.
“I was analysing his movement before and we were adjusting little things. It’s a question of confidence and different movements.
“I have said before if the team plays well and creates chances Fernando will score.”
Torres took just 11 minutes to make his mark when he rounded off a flowing move with a fine finish.
On half-time Seb Larsson’s foul on Ramires gifted Chelsea a penalty. Torres converted with ease then just missed out on his hat-trick four minutes after the break when his shot struck the bar. Juan Mata pounced to net the rebound and it looked game over.
But Adam Johnson reduced the deficit with a 66th-minute drive and Craig Gardner hit the bar before Chelsea were safe.
Eden Hazard and David Luiz both took penalties in midweek but Benitez was delighted to see Torres assume the role.
He said: “For me the positive thing is he had confidence. Fernando said, ‘I’ll take it and I’ll score’.
“We have three takers and it depends on the moment. Sometimes you have a player who has more confidence. They decide.”
Sunderland’s defeat dropped them into the bottom three and Martin O’Neill is under pressure after two league wins in 23.
He said: “It’s a tough fight, it’s a really tough fight. We got some fantastic results last season and it seemed by mid-February we had calmly taken ourselves out of the relegation problems.
“I never saw it like that. I thought every game was a fight and it is that again.”
