Vietnam defends right to punish law breakers

Update: 25-01-2010 | 00:00:00

Comments from Britain, the US and EU on recent trials against those who have broken Vietnam’s laws show “a lack of goodwill” and amounts to “interference in country’s internal affairs,” the foreign ministry said.

“Vietnam handles acts that violate the law and undermine national security to protect the rule of law,” ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga said in a statement on Friday.

"This is to ensure respect for the common benefits of peace, stability and development."

Nga was responding to reporters wanting Vietnam’s response to foreign comments on recent trials against law violators.

"It is regretful that comments from the US, Britain and the European Union lacked goodwill and interfered in Vietnam’s internal affairs," Nga said.
