The Vietnamese athletes have gone even better than meeting the target of bringing home 70 gold medals from the 27th SEA Games Myanmar 2013 set for them at the start of the event.

At 4pm Saturday, Vovinam martial artist Ho Minh Tam grabbed the 72nd gold medal for Vietnam after beating Sivongas in the men’s 65kg finale. A minute before Tam, his teammate Nguyen Thi Kim Hoang snatched the 71st gold in the women’s 50-55kg event.

By 4pm, the Vietnamese martial artists competing at the Taekwondo, Kempo, Muay Thai and Vovinam events have secured six more gold medals, officially smashing its target of 70 golds.

Other gold medalists include Bui Yen Ly (Vovinam), Nguyen Trong Cuong (Taekwondo), Le Duong Lan Phuong – Tran Thi My Duyen (Kempo), and Do Hong Ngoc (Kempo).

Vietnam is expected to bag more gold medals as the Saturday’s competitions have yet to over.

By 4:30pm, Vietnam have won 72 golds, 78 silvers, and 79 bronzes, standing behind leader Thailand and host Myanmar.

This is the last competition day of Vietnam at the 27th SEA Games Myanmar 2013. The Southeast Asia’s largest sporting event will conclude Sunday.
