Vietnam's digital content holds increasing potential

Update: 15-04-2012 | 00:00:00

There was a great potential for Viet Nam to develop its digital content industry and generate a large revenue in the field of information and communications technology, said Le Doan Hop, president of the Digital Communications Society and former Minister of Information and Communications (MIC). Vietnamese IT enterprise VTC Online JSC recently sold the copyrights of two online games to Spanish mobile giant Nvia who will circulate them in 10 European and Latin American countries for a duration of three years. According to Hop, this was the first time Viet Nam had exported online games to the European and Latin American markets, an important milestone in the development of the country's digital content industry. He said the country was making a name for itself on the world market, highlighted by the fact that other countries were starting to recognise Vietnamese trademarks and intellectual property rights. This had contributed to enhancing the production of information technology, he added. Under the contract, Nvia would market Squad and Generation 3 (G3) in Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador and Paraguay, and this could be expanded to other Spanish-speaking countries. The company would be responsible for paying the copyright and sharing turnover with VTC Online. VTC Online would have to develop the games and produce updated versions while supporting users' requirements. Tran Phuong Huy, director of VTC Online said the deal marked an international market breakthrough. He added that a partner in the Middle East had also shown an interest in taking three more of the company's games out onto the global market. VTC Online was focused on digital content, he said, adding that the company was also looking to export other digital products including VTC ebanking and services available at www.go.vn. These products were ideal for the European and Latin American markets, Mark Holladay, general director of Nvia told Dau Tu (Vietnam Investment Review). He expressed his wish that VTC Online would advise and support the circulation process. TMA Joint Stock Company's Mobilephone Solutions Centre has also received interest from partners in Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia for its digital products designed for mobile phones and the iPad. Tran Huu Hong, the centre's director said their mobile navigation, mobile survey, fire monitoring and visual menu had drawn interest from foreign partners who were looking for strategic products to invest in. Statistics from the MIC revealed that Viet Nam's digital content industry revenue reached US$934 million in 2010, up 39 per cent over 2009.
