American football star asks for Vietnamese citizenship

Update: 04-01-2011 | 00:00:00

Doan Van Ut, General Director of the Binh Duong Club JS Company, said that his firm is carrying out procedures to get Vietnamese citizenship for strikers Lee Nguyen and Philani.

Binh Duong football club currently has five foreign players: Philani, Obina, Lee Nguyen, Leandro and Osita. However, the club can use up to four foreign players at the upcoming V-League 2011.

With its ambition to win the V-League 2011, Binh Duong wants to use all five foreign players. The club has asked for the Vietnamese citizenship for Philani and assisted Vietnamese American Lee Nguyen to get his Vietnamese citizenship because Lee Nguyen’s family had already submitted necessary documents.

Ut said that perhaps Lee Nguyen would be recognized as a Vietnamese citizen in early 2011 so he can play as a domestic player after the second round of V-League 2011.

If Lee Nguyen becomes a naturalized Vietnamese, he will not be able to play for the Vietnamese national squad because he had played for the American youth team and the American squad.

Lee Nguyen, 25, joined Hoang Anh Gia Lai club in 2009 with a 3-year contract. In the first football season, he scored 12 goals for the team. However, Hoang Anh Gia Lai broke its contract with Lee Nguyen in mid-2010. Nguyen moved to Binh Duong since then.
