Vietnam’s Minister of Education and Training Pham Vu Luan met with representatives from 11 Belgium universities, who expressed a desire to strengthen tertiary cooperation with the nation. The meeting took place on the sidelines at the Second Global Partnership (GPE) for Education Replenishment Conference ongoing in Brussels from June 25-28. Luan and Micheline Scheys, the secretary general of the Education and Training Department within the Flemish Ministry in Belgium, exchanged measures to expand tertiary education cooperation. At the meeting, 11 university representatives in Flanders expressed their desire to cooperate with Vietnamese partners and to hold a meeting between headmasters of universities and Asia-Europe Education Conference in Hanoi in 2015. Flanders will sign a cooperative agreement with Vietnam on exchanging lecturers and students, mutually recognising degrees and certificates and boosting cooperation in MA and doctorate training. Receiving Luan, Director-General of the Wallonia-Brussels International (WBI) Philippe Suinen said WBI will further foster cooperation with Vietnam in teaching, including granting scholarships for Vietnamese teachers and students. Despite difficulties of lacking of material facilities at a newly-established district, Bac Tan Uyen district division of education and training has made greater efforts to prepare for the coming new school year. In order to prepare for the new school year, Bac Tan Uyen district division of education and training maps out plans to constantly foster teaching staff at all levels. In addition, the division re-checks the number of retired teachers to suggest supplement. At present, Bac Tan Uyen district division of education and training maps out measures of admitting pupils. As a remote district, Bac Tan Uyen district has no big change of population. Headmasters of the local primary schools in cooperation with teachers give good advices to the local party committees to map out plans on mobilizing 6 year old children to go to schools. Assessing education and training in the newly-established district, Duong The Phuong, director of the provincial department of Education and Training said that despite difficulties of material facilities and manpower, Bac Tan Uyen district division of education and training completes its tasks. On May 28, 2001, the provincial People's Committee chairman issued the Decision No.1799/QĐ-CT on setting up the steering board of building Thu Dau Mot University. Till April 26, 2009, Thu Dau Mot University was established on upgrading Binh Duong Pedagogy College in line with the Prime Minister's Decision No.900/QĐ-TTg. Thu Dau Mot University's mission is to train, develop high knowledge human resources to cater for the provincial cause of industrialization and modernization and for the Southern key economic zone and for the whole of the country and is simultaneously to take part in the renewal and tertiary educational development in Vietnam for the sake of reaching prestige in keeping pace with universities of developed nations in the region and world. In addition, the university is to research and transfer technology in service for locality and neighboring province's socio-economic development. Right after its inception, the university re-structured apparatus of faculties, rooms and functional offices, attracted and used effectively as well as assigned proper works for high knowledge human resources from many localities nationwide and created a new image for its development. Until now, establishment of Thu Dau Mot University is the right decision. Up to now, Thu Dau Mot University has had 22 majors with 14,000 students and attracted more than 700 cadres, lecturers (8 associate professor - Ph.Ds, 61 Ph.Ds, 445 masters). Thu Dau Mot University has developed its goal of training on application and practice. Renovation of training, scientific research and tertiary administration works is constantly paid by the university's management board. Additionally, the university takes advantage of strong support of many high professional cadres, lecturers from universities under the HCMC national university, the Ha Noi national university, the HCMC Pedagogy University as well as builds a close relation with educational and scientific agencies inside and outside of the country. The University's directorate sets goals of sustainable development and improvement of training quality, concentration on training based on the demand of society and locality and regional labor market. Moreover, the university's leaders pay much attention to renovating tertiary administration, implementing new training philosophy, innovating teaching method, focusing on professional training and practice. Thanks to synchronous implementation of many measures, Thu Dau Mot University's training quality is significantly improved after many years. The University's teams joining in the national academic contests always gained high prizes and affirmed quality of talent training in the university. These prizes included the national pedagogic skill contest, math olympiad, physics olympiad, chemistry olympiad with 30 various medals. Over the past years, scientific research and technology development in the university has gained some achievements, contributing positively to development of human resources, improvement of knowledge and capacity of cadres and lecturers. The university always facilitates lecturers' study and research. In addition, the work on scientific research among students shows an encouraging change. In the school year of 2013-2014, 38 projects were awarded "Thu Dau Mot university young talents" prize, 3 of which were chosen to join in the ministry-level prizes. Opportunities and challenges Aside from the done results, the university's leaders realize waiting challenges. In its strategy of renewal, Thu Dau Mot University continues to perfect credit system training on depth and learners. Till 2020, the university targets to train 20,000 students, 600 post-university ones, 30 doctorate students, 900 lecturers with 52 majors, meeting labor market and social requirements. In the coming time, Thu Dau Mot University will continue to renovate contents, programs and training methods, focus on developing creative ability, hands-on skill, occupational morality and social understanding, improving quality of scientific research, spurring cooperation with foreign universities and international organizations and so on.
