Japan attaches importance to relations with Vietnam

Japan considers Vietnam one of its key partners and wants to further develop the strategic partnership with the Southeast Asian nation.Senior Japanese politicians, including Foreign Minister Kishida Fumio, Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Tamura Norihisa, and Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Shimomura Hakubun, voiced their support for the Japan-Vietnam relations, while receiving Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan in Tokyo on May 24.They pledged to maintain official development assistance (ODA) for Vietnam’s socio-economic development.  Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Shimomura Hakubun (L) welcomes Deputy PM Nguyen Thien Nhan in Tokyo (Photo:VGP)Nhan thanked Japan for providing its ODA to Vietnam over the past 20 years, even when it was taking great pains to overcome the consequences of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunamis.He proposed both countries increase mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas, especially in economics, human resources development, and science-technology.Nhan asked Japan to speed up several cooperation projects, including those to upgrade a number of Vietnamese vocational schools and universities, and establish a coordination mechanism to ensure labour supplies for Japanese businesses operating in Vietnam.He also proposed that Japan work on the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Hospital in HCM City, receive Vietnamese orderlies, and assist Vietnam to improvr the capacity of its seaports.Both sides agreed to increase high-level visit exchanges.Nhan welcomed Japan’s proposal to build a Vietnam-Japan university in Vietnam.Deputy PM Nhan and Foreign Minister Fumio witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on Japanese teaching in Vietnam between the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.The same day, Nhan met with Matsuda Iwao, former member of the House of Councilor, Koizumi Toshiaki, former member of the House of Representatives, and Hattori Norio, former Japanese ambassador to Vietnam.He welcomed his hosts’ proposals to strengthen Vietnam-Japan cooperation in developing human resources, caring for elderly people, and increasing people-to-people exchanges.Before leaving Tokyo for Hanoi, Nhan met with Vietnamese embassy staff and representatives of the Vietnamese community in Japan.
