Models of safe vegetables signal optimism

Update: 05-07-2012 | 00:00:00
Provincial Department of Plant Protection initiated models of safe vegetables to satisfy the needs of local consumers. The project of “Building safe vegetable planting areas in Binh Duong Province in 2010-2012” built by the department is projected to 2 pivotal communes of Tan Dinh (Ben Cat District) and Uyen Hung (Tan Uyen District). A farm of vegetables in Uyen Hung, Tan Uyen In Tan Dinh, 45 households are members who grow vegetables on 11ha varying from bitter melon, cucumbers, winged bean, asparagus bean, etc. In Uyen Hung Townlet, 23 households are participants over an area of 10 ha. The participants have long been planters of small scale and traditional types. Upon implementation of the project, the planters have been more skillful with higher income yields. The harvest of vegetable farms has increased significantly to suply for supermarkets at tons a month. The new features of such models are that operations are coordinated by a group leader with monitoring technical staff on daily basis to ensure techniques of planting, caring, insect trapping, bug prevention, safe use of vegetable protection chemicals, and farming log keeping. Mr. Nguyen Huu Hien, group leader of Uyen Hung Townlet vegetable farms shared with us that the models of safe vegetables brought joy to local farmers. The group has not only offer seeds but also materials for farm construction in effective manner without influencing on self and community health. Farmers usually are not familiar with taking notes for log keeping; however, they are skillful through time. By communication, technicians have stressed on the importance of log keeping to ensure the productions should meet the procedures including VietGAP procedures. The success of safe vegetable models brings into question of how producers outside such models could survive the market. As the matter of fact, production of safe vegetable farms does not maintain stable supply to increasing demands of the supermarkets. Thus, the functional agencies should stay close to the farmers to help them with production and selling of their products provided that they are off the standard.
