Thailand’s general election likely to take place in late 2018

Thailand’s general election is scheduled to take place in late 2018, Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwon was quoted by the country’s media on April 5 as saying.

Thailand’s political parties will be still under restrictions after the country’s new constitution takes effect on April 6, he added.

Talking with the press after a weekly cabinet meeting on April 4, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha also said that political parties have to wait as orders need to be maintained until the election. However, PM Chan-ocha did not mention the date of the election.

According to a timetable stated in the new constitution, it takes 570 days to draft and approve new laws. Therefore, Thailand cannot hold the general election until November 2018.
