Awards for outstanding pupils at the center

Established in 1886, Thuan An Center for Disable Children, or called “Lai Thieu Center for the Deaf and Dumb” is one of the centers for deaf children under the boarding and semi-boarding forms. The center is also a place to give skills for teachers for deaf schools and now has a total of 68 staff, including 9 nuns.

In addition to its language training program, Thuan An Center for Disable Children also provides subjects for deaf children as stipulated by the Ministry of Education and Training. This is also the country’s first and largest center for the deaf. Every year, it receives, educates and takes care of 200 or 300 deaf children from many localities nationwide.

At the center, hearing-impaired children are taught how to integrate into community via sign language. The center is effectively applying a consultant program for parents whose children are hearing-impaired persons.

The center also gives vocational training to its pupils. Nun Tran Thi Mai Phuong, a vocational teacher at the center said there are many skills for pupils herein to select, including sewing, drawing, embroidering, carpentry…

Thanks to the efforts by them and teachers, many pupils have found suitable jobs after leaving the center. Some like Nguyen Truong Tien are very confident to rise up with high skill. Tien has become top 30 hearing-impaired workers at Yazaki Co.

Possibly speaking, the center has actually become a home for hearing-impaired children. It is hoped that the center will receive more attention and support from organizations and individuals so that it takes better care of hearing-impaired children herein, helping them become good citizens for the society and more confident to integrate into community by their ability.
