Brazil resumes import of Vietnamese seafood

Update: 06-04-2015 | 08:50:10

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply has said it will resume granting licences for seafood imports from Vietnam.

The decision came following a proposal by Brazil’s Ministry of Fishing and Aquaculture after it made an inspection tour in Vietnam last March.

According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnamese seafood producers should contact Brazilian importers directly for updated information so that their exports meet regulations on seafood safety.

In September 2014, Brazil suspended the import of Vietnamese seafood over safety concerns.

Vietnam’s seafood exports to the South American country reached US$121 million and US$125 million in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

In January 2015, seafood exports to Brazil were only US$2 million, a US$13 million drop year on year.
