Realizing mangosteen brings high economic efficiency, Nguyen Van Ty residing at Suoi Cat hamlet in Dau Tieng district’s Thanh Tuyen commune has researched to got involved in the model of planting this kind of tree. As a result, this model has brought his family a stable source of income.

Main income

In 2009, we had a chance to meet Nguyen Van Ty when writing articles about the movement of planting fruit trees and breeding fish in Thanh Tuyen commune. At that time, he pointed his finger at his one-year mangosteen orchard and said: “Wait and see, this orchard will bring his family millions of dong in the next few years”. 

His words came true. After more than four years, we enjoyed fresh and delicious fruits from his 10-hectare mangosteen. His mangosteen orchard is known by many people. Currently, his family secures hundreds of millions of dong in annual profit from more than 200 mangosteen trees.

Ty said that he and his wife started business in Thanh Tuyen commune with bare hands. Thanks to his diligence, Ty bought a marshy land, but always faced failure of crops, due to flooding. He felt disappointed but not discouraged. And then he came to Lai Thien in Thuan An town, where is famous for mangosteen to buy mangosteen varieties for cultivation. And mangosteen now brings a main source of income his family. Last year, he earned VND120mln from his mangosteen orchard.

Mangosteen orchard replicated

Ty’s mangosteen orchard is well-known as a typical model of Thanh Tuyen commune. Noticeably, the People’s Committee of Thanh Tuyen commune has approved a plan on mangonsteen orchard development in association with tourism.

Huynh Van Duong, Chairman of Thanh Tuyen communal Farmers’ Association said that Ty has taken the lead in the local mangosteen orchard development. With good growth and stable productivity, his mangosteen orchard is seen as an outstanding model for other farming households to study and follow.

Ty’s mangosteen orchard has also brought a reputation to mangosteen in Thanh Tuyen in particular and in Dau Tieng in general. In 2013, he bravely took part in the “Southern Delicious and Safe Fruit” contest and his mangosteen won second prize at the contest. His mangosteen also pocketed third prize at the 2014 “Southern Delicious and Safe Fruit” contest.

He has not satisfied with initial results yet. He said that he has researched to plant mangosteen under a new way with higher yield. This way is line with conditions on soil and weather in two communes of Thanh Tuyen and Thanh An. He hopes that more and more local people will get involved in the mangosteen-growing model so that Thanh Tuyen will become a specialized area on mangosteen in the southeastern region.
