Raising the role of farmers in rural development

Update: 14-09-2011 | 00:00:00

Mr Trong made these remarks during a working session with leaders of the Vietnam Farmers Association Central Committee in Hanoi on September 13 to review the implementation of the 7th Party Central Committee Conference (10th tenure) Resolution on agriculture, farmers and rural areas (also known as Resolution 26).

He emphasized that it is essential to reduce the proportion of agriculture in the country’s economic structure, while increasing output and quality. The Vietnam Farmers Association should implement Resolution 26 properly in the future and make proposals to help farmers improve their living conditions, he said.

Mr Trong also expressed his belief that the Association will continue to renew and raise its effectiveness to become the farmers’ ally in the ongoing process of rural industrialization and modernization.

Chairman of the Vietnam Farmers Association, Nguyen Quoc Cuong, delivered a report on the association’s recent achievements after implementing Resolution 26.

He said the Association has promoted the dissemination of information and encouraged farmers to participate in emulation movements to help each other escape poverty.

Participants at the working session highlighted the vital role of farmers in building new rural areas. They also pointed out some shortcomings in agricultural land use and called on the Party and State to issue a law on farmers and invest more in rural areas.
