The “Making rivers nice” movement in Tan Uyen district absorbed the participation of more than 12,000 local youths. Particularly, they actively got involved in upgrading nearly 120km of the local rural roads; clearing the local rivers…., contributing to raising public awareness of environmental protection.
Local youths getting involved in activities of environmental protection
Last summer, 200 youths of TDM town also teamed up with 30 students from Singapore’s Technology Republic College to collect water hyacinth with total length of 5km and grow 350 anti-landslide trees along with the Saigon River bank.
To achieve the above results, provincial Youth Union over time focused on the mobilization and propaganda work via activities for the environment such as “Volunteer Saturdays”, “Green Sundays”…All 89 communes, wards and townships have so far set up volunteer squads for environmental protection.
During the Youth Summer Volunteer Campaign 2010, the local youths worked out 86 youth works with a total expense of VND300mln, including improving rural traffic system and infrastructure; mobilizing rural people to keep environmental hygiene…
Provincial Farmers’ Society also organized a lot of substantial movements, contributing to raising their member’s awareness of environmental protection. Particularly, it kicked off a contest on the environmental protection law; mobilized 300 members to make environmental hygiene; gave training on application of the biogas model for over 100 members in Tan Uyen district…
Rural environment gets better and better
As a result, the operational efficiency from the above volunteer movements and the mobilization, propaganda work has contributed to raising the quality of the rural environment in the province. The whole province now has 73 farmers’ clubs. The local farmers have also step by step applied methods against diseases and limited abuse of pesticide in cultivation; developed the model of high tech-based agricultural production…
Besides, the province’s program on clean water and environmental hygiene in the rural region has been continued to be realized. Since 2005, there have been 43 clean water works invested by the State in the rural region of the province. Currently, 92% of households living in the rural region are in use of clean water, up 11% compared to 2004. The ratio of rural households with hygienic toilets is 82% and there are 52% of breeding facilities with waste treatment system. The waste collection and treatment in the rural region has also been realized, contributing to improving the rural environment of the province.
