Nurture the passion for scientific research

In recent years, the scientific research movement among high school students has brought a new form of learning, helping them be creative and express their passion. Every year, Provincial Department of Education & Training organizes scientific and technical innovation contests for high school students with the purpose of encouraging high school students to conduct scientific research, create techniques and technologies, and apply knowledge of subjects to solve real-world problems, contributing to innovating the form of teaching organization.

In school year 2022-2023, Department of Education & Training held a provincial science and technology competition for high school students with 202 contestants/110 projects registered for the competition. Department of Education & Training selected team selected the two best projects to participate in the national science and technology competition for high school students. At the end, the project "Equipment to detect the whitening agent Tinopal in vermicelli fibers based on the photoluminescence phenomenon" of Thanh Tuyen High School’s students (Dau Tieng district) won fourth prize; project "Smart toilets in schools" of My Phuoc Junior High School’s students (Ben Cat Town) won the promising award.

As someone with many years of experience guiding students to participate in science and technology competitions, Do Quoc Tuan, teacher at My Phuoc Secondary School, shared: “The science and technology competition for high school students is truly a useful playground for students, creating an opportunity for them to introduce their scientific research results. They came to the contest with love and passion for serious scientific research. Each contest product shows the enthusiasm and passion for scientific creativity of the students. Hopefully in the near future, many useful playgrounds for children would be opened so that they can nurture their passion for scientific research right from high school."

Projects participating in the science and technology competition for high school students showed that most of the students' ideas are related to real life, suitable for research conditions in schools. In particular, the students sought to apply the knowledge they received from school and from different sources to create projects that are practical for current life or create specific products that can beneficial to the community.

Scientific research activities

Recently, 30 teams from many localities such as Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Phuoc, Vinh Long competed together in the second "EIU MCR Automatic Racing Car Programming" contest organized by Eastern International University. Teams went through many intense and dramatic rounds of competition in two groups: basic board and professional board. After the best efforts through each intense race with the enthusiastic cheers of the fans, the champion of the second EIU MCR belonged to Sigma team of Viet Anh Junior High and Primary School (Binh Duong) (basic table) and Team TC03 of Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport and Communication (professional table).

Bui Quang Tien, a member of the contest's organizing committee, said that the contest contributed to promoting the movement of learning, research, creativity and experience for students. The competition helps students apply the knowledge they have learned into practice to build a strong knowledge and skills base for the future. This is not only a useful and attractive playground for students to express their technical talent and passion, but also helps them learn and accumulate more knowledge and experience that can be applied to their learning.

In recent years, scientific research activities have always received much attention and been top priority at Thu Dau Mot University. The school has also created conditions for students and lecturers to participate in scientific research and achieved many remarkable results. Namely, in the 2022-2023 school year, the school's staff and lecturers carried out 124 topics/projects. In addition, the school assigned 463 scientific research topics to students and accepted 278 topics... The school's students also participated in many academic competitions outside the school and won high awards.

Do Quynh Nhu, student of architecture faculty of Thu Dau Mot University, shared: “Science research not only gives us the opportunity to access our favorite professional fields, but also creates many opportunities for us to exchange and accumulate experience, learn scientific thinking methods, and solve problems as well as present results and ideas in the most scientific way".

To promote students to participate in scientific research, in addition to investing in facilities, universities also actively organize science and technology activities, seminars for students to exchange expertise and access new methods and apply it in carrying out scientific research. In addition, schools also commend and reward individuals who have made many contributions and actively participated in scientific research. Although the quantity and quality of scientific research projects among students in recent years have tended to increase, the main participants in scientific research are still final-year students. To motivate students to participate in scientific research more, universities need to have policies to support and reward each group and individual.

Through the topics participating in the science and technology competition for high school students, it can be seen that most of students' ideas are related to real life, suitable for research conditions in schools. In particular, the students sought to apply the knowledge they received from school and from different sources to create projects that are practical for current life or create specific products that can beneficial to the community.
