Sports movements developed among San Chi ethnic community

Implementing the movement of the whole public practicing physical exercises by examples of great President Ho Chi Minh for better health in labor and education, San Chi ethnic community in Phu Giao Distrit has actively engaged in sport practice. Beside good health status, they have won various medals in tournaments and festival of culture and sports in the province and nation.

San Chi ethnic community is concentrated at Dong Tam Hamlet in Tam Lap Commune of Phu Giao District with about 30 families and 100 members who have migrated from Northern provinces 20 years ago.

Talking about the call for people to practice sports, Lam Hong Quan, the Deputy Chair of Tam Lap Commune Vietnamese Fatherland Front Committee, said: “For years, the learning and following President Ho Chi Minh’s moral examples, we have called upon our children to actively join up sports practice of their favorite including those sports of strength in the community including tug-of-war, pole pushing, petangue, etc. Accordingly, in recent years, sports of bold ethic traits have been developed among San Chi ethnic community and gained high achievements.”

Sports of San Chi ethnic community have, for consecutive years gained titles of national sports games for ethnic communities. Totally, they have won 16 medals in pole pushing, tug-of-war, and petangue.

Pole pushing has been widely practiced as a sport among San Chi ethnic community

Particularly at the national sports games for ethnic communities in 2014, the San Chi ethnic athletes have won 5 gold medals of pole pushing, 2 gold medals of male and female tug-of-war. At the same event in 2010, they have won 6 medals of all kinds, and in 2014 1 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals of tug-of-war, and pole pushing. Beside national and provincial prizes, San Chi ethnic community have been active in sports events organized by Center for Information and Sports of Phu Giao District to win various medals.

Being practiced with sports and attending the competition, La Van Hung said: "We are farmers in the majority, making it important to have good health. Thus, we have frequently practice sports to improve our health. Besides, sports practicing also helps us to meet other ethnic communities in districts and provinces to learn about their experience in production and life."

To gain such results of glory in sports, San Chi ethnic community, by the care of all-level Party Committee and authority of Phu Giao District by policies of investments and promotion of sports development, San Chi ethnic community has established petangue clubs and a playground of petangue at Dong Tam Hamlet. Besides, they have frequently organized sports tournaments of the ethnic community and the society to attract and promote sports practice of the younger generation.

The season greeting festival has been revived among San Chi ethnic community since 2006 to be organized on the 6th day of lunar January every year. At the event, the rituals are combined with sports games including pole pushing, petangue, tug-of-war, performance of stilts, penata, flag of war among various folk sports games. Through the activities, the enthusiasm and pride of youths in the community are promoted.

La Van Su, one of San Chi person of early presence in Phu Giao District, looks forward to the care of district leaders to improve sports facilities for development of sports in San Chi ethnic community. Besides, local district center for information and sports offers coaches for them to practice sports with rules and regulations for competition. Besides, more tournaments should be organized for San Chi ethnic community to compete and gain experience for better achievements in sports event, contributing to the glory of sports in Binh Duong and for ethnic communities locally.
