The State and people of Vietnam want to strengthen effective, mutually beneficial cooperation with the State and people of Myanmar, State President Truong Tan Sang told Myanmar Parliament Speaker U Shwe Mann.

Myanmar Parliament Speaker U Shwe Mann (L) said he believes Vietnam will be among the top five foreign investors in his country next year

Receiving the visiting Myanmar legislator in Hanoi on September 6, Sang spoke highly of the result of earlier talks between the two legislative bodies’ delegations, and suggested the two bodies increase exchange visits to share experience in parliamentary operations.

He also commended Myanmar’s recent achievements in politics, diplomacy and socio-economic development, and its successful assumption of the ASEAN Presidency role in 2014.

The President thanked Myanmar for its assistance for Vietnam in the past struggle for national liberation, as well as its support for Vietnam’s stance in settling the East Sea issue.

Both countries should seek measures to increase trade ties, he said, hoping Myanmar will continue creating favourable conditions for Vietnamese companies to operate efficiently in the country, in order to bolster cooperation in key areas of agriculture, banking-finance, telecommunications, oil & gas, mineral exploitation, electrical equipment manufacturing, construction and real estate.

For his part, U Shwe Mann said Myanmar and Vietnam have many things in common, including history, culture, and geographical locations, laying a firm foundation for strengthening bilateral cooperation in various areas.

He lauded Vietnam’s development achievements and its increased position regionally and globally, and said his delegation’s visit is to share development experience with Vietnam.

Vietnam is currently the seventh largest foreign investor in Myanmar, he said, calling on Vietnamese businesses to increase investment in Myanmar, especially in the areas of their strength.

Myanmar attaches importance to fostering cooperative relations with Vietnam, for peace and development in the region and the rest of the world, said U Shwe Mann.

U Shwe Mann began a four-day visit to Vietnam on September 5 at the invitation of Vietnam National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.
