Phu Giao is an agricultural district with rubber as a main kind of cultivated crops together with development in terms of animal husbandry. Hence, market impacts greatly affect the local economic development, especially when rubber latex prices have not seen signs on recovery yet. But, with proper solutions of the local Party organizations and authorities at all levels, the district’s agricultural sector has still maintained stable growth and reached the set targets.

Phu Giao district’s agricultural production are on recovery with stable growth amid the country’s agricultural sector facing negative impacts from droughts and salt intrusion in the Mekong Delta and Central Highlands regions. Particularly, the district’s agro-forestry production value over the past nine months reached over VND2.37trillion, or 66.78% of the year’s plan and up 7.7% compared to last year’s corresponding period.
Farmers in Phu Giao benefit from growing safe vegetables
The total production value of agro-forestry and fisheries from district-based cultivation and animal husbandry farms was estimated at more than VND1.33trillion. The local agricultural structure continued shifting towards the gradual increase of animal husbandry occupying 30.1% and the gradual decrease of cultivation occupying 69.9%.
The district’s total farming area is now more than 40,770 hectares, comprising of
more than 2,850 hectares of annual plants, down 6.45 hectares against last year’s same period; more than 37,922 hectares of perennial plants, up more than 1.044 hectares compared to last year’s same period. Noticeably, there was a vigorous fluctuation in the area of growing perennial plants in An Thai commune with more than 998 hectares of rubber trees.
Also during the period, the district’s total herd of poultry and cattle was 1.8 billion of heads, including more than 165,000 pigs, nearly 3,150 cows, 635 buffaloes and 1,6 billion of fowls, up 40.97%, 53.61%, 16.98%, 24.28% against last year’s same period, respectively.
Further developing
Over the past nine months, the district’s People’s Committee instructed relevant agencies to drastically and effectively implement activities against diseases in animals and plants. The district was proactive in warning and guiding farmers to well take solutions against diseases in animals and plants. In comparison with last year’s same period, the district’s area for crops with diseases decreased sharply. There were only 262 hectares of rubber trees with diseases reported in the district. The district also well controlled over the situation of diseases in livestock with the rate of vaccination surpassing the set plan.
Such these apart, the district paid attention to inspecting the transport of animals and their products. At 15pm of August 11, 2016, the local functional force found out a vehicle carrying 22 dead pigs of 230 kg with nasty smell in Tan Long commune. All these pigs were destroyed and their owner was also fined with VND3.5million.
The district will further promote the local agricultural sector for the rest of the year. Accordingly, the district will carry out a variety of breakthrough solutions in the process of agricultural development in particular and economic development in general. This aims to create the foundation for the district’s Party Committee, People’s Committee to set up development strategies in line with the local situation, step by step building up a new-style rural district with hi-tech agriculture in the future.
