To facilitate sustainable development of urban agriculture

The model has especially developed with timely support for stability.Meantime, the new model of urban agriculture has been gradually established with more technological advancement applied.Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) has also implemented some models across districts, towns, and Thu Dau Mot City such as vegetable growing in open net house, aqua-cultivation of vegetables in membrane houses, planting orchid and ornament plants in satellite urban zones.As a result, 3.5ha of the province have been planted with hydroponic plants, 2.6ha for mushrooms, 0.74ha for sprouts, 22.8ha for orchid, and over 69ha for ornament plants.Urban produces have been present at major supermarkets including the produces of Uyen Hung Ward Team of Safe Vegetable in Tan Uyen Town., Tan Dinh Ward Team of Safe Vegetable in Ben Cat Town, etc.So as to make those models gain high economic outcomes, DARD has frequently offered information dissemination and transferred technology and science to farmers.Mr. Nguyen Van Hiep, an owner of mokara orchid planting lot at Tuong Binh Hiep Ward, Thu Dau Mot Town, said that he has not only supported in terms of seeds and materials but also with technology on weekly and monthly basis by local Society of Plant Protection.Currently, his 200m2 land-lot for orchid could yield income of VND 3-3.5 million a month. However, Mr. Pham Van Bong, Director of DARD claimed tremendous challenges ahead.The initial challenge was that the prices of agricultural materials fluctuated higher and higher while the sales was relatively low in price. On the other hand, the changing climate has been potentially limiting the effectiveness of the model.So as to tone down such challenges, Mr. Pham Van Bong affirmed the tranfering of scientific advancement in urban agricultural production integrated to structural transition of agricultural production, heading to quality and high yielding production for safe and highly competitive products.Meantime, DARD shall build up specialized staffs to support the farmers by timely supplying information and scientific advancement to service the sustainable urban agriculture for the time to come of the province.Reported by Cao Son – Translated by Vi Bao
