Update: 07-04-2010 | 00:00:00

According to Tran Van Dung, Director of provincial Agricultural Promotion Center, the whole province is now home to more than 125,000 ha of rubber, 65% of which are small rubber plantations. Around 70% of small rubber plantations are under exploitation.

Due to seeing rubber latex with the high selling price, many farmers have recently given up rice planting and planted rubber trees instead. Mr.Dung said that his center has also joined hands with the Divisions of Agriculture and Rural Development of the districts and towns to give recommendations about this growing to the local farmers.

Despite the recommendations by the province’s functional agencies, many farmers living in several low-lying areas, especially those in communes near Dau Tieng reservoir and along Sai Gon river have still got involved in growing rubber trees, which face a lot of risks for damage.

So far, there have not been inadequate statistics about the local farmers’ damage pertaining to the growing of rubber trees on low-lying fields yet. Phu Giao, Dau Tieng and Ben Cat are districts with the great growth speed of rubber plantations, many of them have been developed on fields.

Pham Cong Ai, a farmer in Dau Tieng district’s An Lap commune said that he got a loan of VND100mln to grow one ha of rubber trees on his field where was previously used for rice planting. He has felt worried when hearing recommendations about this growing from the local functional agencies. Not only him, but many farmers have rushed to give up rice planting and planted rubber trees instead.

According to Mr.Dung, many plantations specialized in growing rubber trees have been forwarding to consider for reducing the number of rubber trees on low-lying areas for their low output and quality. Meanwhile, many farmers have been daring to get bank loans to grow rubber trees on fields, which faces a high risk of complete loss…
