Local animal husbandry sector towards TPP

Update: 02-12-2015 | 12:11:18

Binh Duong’s animal husbandry sector in the 2016 and 2020 period aims at hi-tech development. The southern region of the province is braced up for urban agricultural development with models on breeding ornamental fish, trees…while the northern region will foster concentrated animal husbandry models.

The local animal husbandry sector now has great opportunities when Vietnam joins the Trans Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership (TPP). One of the sector’s first actions is to change breeders’ awareness towards concentrated animal husbandry under industrial formula. And building disease-free areas is the most important thing for the sector.

Building disease-free areas

Realizing the above-mentioned issue, Binh Duong has made a project on “Building areas free from foot-and-mouth disease in cattle and hog cholera between 2012 and 2015”.

Provincial Animal Health Sub-department said that after three-year implementation of the project, the whole province has so far developed 48 concentrated slaughterhouses, 65 disease-free facilities while successfully building 3 disease-free communes under national standards. The Sub-department also stepped up inspection work with nearly 6.8 million pigs and 75,000 buffaloes, cows under control over the past time.

There was no disease outbreak in cattle reported in the province during the 2012-2015 period. Noticeably, the province extended a policy on supporting 100% of cost on vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease and cholera for small-sized breeding households.

Tran Phu Cuong, Head of provincial Animal Health Sub-department said that the above results came from the efforts by the local animal husbandry sector in propaganda work. Particularly, the Sub-department over the past five years delivered more than 20,000 propaganda leaflets on diseases; opened 18 training courses on foot-and-mouth disease in cattle for breeders; organized 145 training courses for those who participate in the project…More importantly, the sector’s propaganda work was improved in both content and form, helping raise public awareness of the harmful effects of the above diseases…

Bound for quality animal husbandry sector

Building disease-free zones and facilities in the province will focus on breeding facilities for disease-free recognition under provincial Plan No.3106/KH-UBND just promulgated. Upon the local real situation plus the instruction of the Ministry of Agriculture-Rural Development, the province will implement a project on “Building pilot disease-free zones in chickens towards meeting requirements for export in Dong Nai, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc and Tay Ninh”.

Moreover, Binh Duong will also strive to reach more than 90% of concentrated chicken-breeding facilities and 100% of communes with disease-free recognition till July 2017 and to be recognized as a bird flu and Newcastle-free zone by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) till December 2020.

To Do Thi Xuan Hong, Director of Thanh Loi Animal Feed Co. in Tan Uyen town, the province’s animal husbandry sector needs to be developed towards concentration and strong sci-tech application to raise the quality of products, especially say no to the use of banned substances in animal husbandry, which is seen as a necessary condition for joining the TPP playground…

Pham Van Bong, Deputy Director of provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that the local animal husbandry sector will further speed up propaganda towards concentrated animal husbandry. The sector’s first task at present is to reinforce domestic market before deliberating about exporting cattle and poultry meat into the TPP participating countries.
