Personal data protection is a constitutional right in Viet Nam and has been reflected in several laws, including the Civil Code 2015, Law on Electronic Transactions 2005, and Press Law 2016.
However, thanks to robust technological advancements, protection of personal data has become increasingly urgent in Viet Nam as more than 64 million Vietnamese are internet users, accounting for 66% of the country’s population, up 19% from that of 2018.
Viet Nam’s internet economy has seen an annualized growth rate of 39% since 2015, making it the second fastest-growing in ASEAN, behind Indonesia, with an annual average growth rate of 49%, according to a report jointly conducted by Google, Singapore government-backed Temasek Holdings, and US-based management consultancy Bain & Company.
The country is emerging as the most digital of all economies in the region, in which e-commerce is a key driver behind the impressive numbers, the report says./.
